He was talking with his girlfriend about their relationship. He was in love with her, but from the way his girlfriend was behaving, he figured she didn't love him. He had caught her in bed with another man last week, and had avoided all contact with her since yesterday. And to top it all off, it wasn't a complete stranger who she had been sleeping with, oh no, it was one of their many friends. He'd felt so angry at this betrayal that he had managed to avoid her until yesterday. She had wanted him back, told him that she had been so stupid to get drunk at that party they had gone to with their friends. He had even asked that night if she had wanted a ride home!!! She had responded that she had been fine!

Yeah... so fine that he had caught her the following afternoon with that friend. "Oh sure, you think I will just take you back while you sleep around you sl..." This other girl grabbed a barstool and smashed it on the bad guy's head. Just great, why do I always have to be in the middle of something bad? First I catch my girlfriend cheating on me, and now this peace is disturbed by some bad guy planning to rob the diner for money. I thought. I couldn't be more wrong.

But there was a second bad guy with a mask covering his face. He held a gun in front of the pretty young woman's face. Hey, she looked hot, can you blame me to look at a girl when my girlfriend has just cheated on me?

"This isn't about YOU, sweetheart." The second bad guy had said as he looked at her behind his mask. I imagined him grinning behind that disguise.

I saw her horrified face as she was being held at gunpoint, while totally ignoring my girlfriend, not even finishing with what I was going to say to her, as I was about to call her a slut, maybe add the word whore to my sentence... when the gun went off and she was hit in her face. I saw her fall to the ground, right between the entrance to the establishment.

The masked men left the establishment with their target, the man this young woman had been talking with before all this craziness ensued. They got into a van and drove off. I heard someone shout "Somebody call 9-1-1!" Without thinking, I grabbed my cellphone and dialed. I explained what had been going on.

When I had ended the call, I felt a hand wrap around my body. I pushed her away. "Go, leave. I don't care about you anymore. Go screw every friend of ours, heck, I don't even care if you go lesbian, but us? We are over. Get out." I told my girlfriend, who just became my ex-girlfriend. I didn't care if the other patrons of this diner were looking at us. I wanted out. I didn't want anything to do with a slut like her.

"Fine. Good luck playing hero!" She yelled at me as she grabbed her purse and walked out, actually stepping over the body of that young woman. I didn't care about her anymore, so I grabbed my wallet and left some money on the counter. Just that moment, the paramedics arrived. They put the young woman's body on a stretcher and asked who had called. All the other patrons pointed at me. We got into the ambulance and drove toward the hospital.

For some strange reason I took one of the hands of the injured young woman in my own and squeezed softly. "You're going to be okay..." I whispered.
