Goodbye

Jan Brown just couldn't stop thinking about her. Dani Baptiste. Such a sweet girl back in high school. They had hooked up at this school party one night. Since then they had been dating until she wanted to pursue her dreams of an aspiring dancer, so she moved away. They never officially broke up, but just stopped calling eachother. Now Jan had also stored her mom's cellphone number in his phonebook, not for what you would think.

After he had taken a shower, Jan decided to give Dani a call. He had absolutely NO idea if she had changed her number, and had totally no idea with which kind of crowd Dani would hang with today, but still he wanted to see if she could pick up her phone and maybe put some more fire in their life. A lot of time had passed. Strange that he never had tried to call her before.

: This number is no longer in service. :

"Dammit!" Jan cursed as he scrolled toward Mrs. Baptiste's number. Her name was different now, she was now Captain Peyroux.

At the New York Police Department...

She glanced at the caller ID and smirked. "That's been a long time." she said softly, before she pressed the green button to accept the call. *You can do this* She thought, but failed. "J...Jan?" She whispered in a sob.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Bap-" "Actually, it's Peyroux now, Jan Brown." She interrupted him.

"Oh. I'm sorry, Mrs. Peyroux, I can't seem to reach Dani on her cell, operator said the number is no longer in service. Is there a way I can reach her?" Jan asked her, but was only met with silence. "Mrs. Peyroux?" Jan asked after some seconds had passed without getting an answer from the other line.

"I'm sorry, Jan. I think she would have loved to hear from you again sooner, but... my baby girl..." she swallowed to get rid of the lump in her throat. "She's dead."

This time it was Jan who was silent. "What? How? Why? Was she a victim in a robbery? What happened?!"

*Yeah, and you would have been that knight in shining armor like you had been back in high school, right?* She thought. She had been briefed by Sara about everything that had happened, the shit with the Witchblade and all. If she hadn't been given a part of the Witchblade, heck, even been given the WHOLE of the Witchblade once upon a time, this whole thing wouldn't have happened and who knows, maybe Dani would have found another man, or hey, she would have happily given Jan Dani's new number.

Dani's mother told him bits and pieces, of course leaving the Witchblade parts out of it. She told him where her baby girl was buried and Jan replied that he would book a flight immediately to meet up with her.

They both wrapped their arms around eachother and just cried, not caring who was there at the airport. Dani's mom smiled softly. "I would have wished we could have met up again under better circumstances, I would have happily given you her number." she said, sobbing. "She had currently been single again. There was one relationship... which didn't last long."

Jan didn't even ask with who Dani had had that relationship. They got Jan a hotel room and while Captain Peyroux went back to work, deciding NOT to invite him to come along and coincidentally meeting Dani's murderer Sara Pezzini, Jan went to visit Dani's grave at the cemetary where she was buried. *Why do I even keep working with Sara?* Dani's mom thought as she walked back into the Precinct building.

Jan sank to his knees with a bouquet of flowers in front of the grave. "Why, Dani? Why?" Jan whispered as he began to cry. The bouquet fell on the ground in front of her gravestone as Jan wrapped his arms around the structure. His tears stained the ground where her body was buried. "I loved you so much, I still do!" He yelled and cried.

After he had stopped crying, Jan left the cemetary and drove to the hotel room. After he had slammed the door in a rage, he reached for pen and paper and wrote only one sentence on it.

Mrs. Baptiste, this is for the best. You don't need to investigate this matter, I did it to be with your daughter. Goodbye.

He left the note on the dresser.

Before Dani's mom had left him, Jan had set up his cd collection and searched through it until he found the album that he wanted. He slipped the cd into the cd player he had brought along with him and skipped the songs to find the one most appropriate for something like this. As the intro of Nickleback's "I'd Come For You" started to play, Jan pressed one last button, the one for continuous repeat.

Then he slid a hand into his backpack to bring forth the last item he had taken with him... and stabbed himself repeated times into his chest with the knife. There was nothing mystical about it, it was just a plain kitchen knife.  He fell on the sheets as the blood left his body and pooled crimson on the sheets of the hotel bed.

End.
